Otoplasty is an operation to correct a misshaped ear, most commonly called a cup ear deformity. The operation is performed most frequently on children around age six years, but is also performed on adults of all ages. Prominent ears, “Dumbo ears” are reshaped to bring the ear closer to the side of the head. When performed by an experienced plastic surgeon, the results are completely natural. When performed poorly, the ear is misshaped, often with a so-called telephone deformity with the mid-portion of the ear too close to the patient’s head.
